ROMANESQUE ROUTE
The spectacular landscapes of the high mountains and the local heritage have coexisted for centuries, sharing the culture and traditions of Val d'Aran. Each of the 33 towns in the Aran valley has its own church, some of which are veritable treasures, jewels, both in terms of their architecture and of the paintings or sculptures we find inside, a highly varied and exceptional artistic legacy.
We encourage you to discover fifteen of the most notable churches. Most of these churches were built between the 12th and 13th centuries. In general, the Romanesque style in the valley is characterised by its late Romanesque features, although some churches exhibit traits from the First Romanesque, with doors carved with a rich iconography. Common to all this heritage are lavishly ornamented sculptures, and bell towers that are immediately identifiable as typical of the villages in the Aran valley.
