The future talents of alpine skiing in the U16 category in the OPA of Baqueira
05/02/2020
From February 11 to 13, the best international skiers of the U16 category will meet in the OPA,consisting of a super-G, a giant and a parallel team event to be performedat Baqueira Beret ski resort.
After the past editions of the OPA held in Liechtenstein in 2018 and in Switzerland in 2019, it is nowtimeto travel to Spain for this 2020 edition, specifically in Baqueira Beret, which will host this continental cup for young categories during11 to February 13. The efforts of the Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation (RFEDI) with the FIS and Baqueira's growing interest in high competition have made it possible for Spain to once again be the scene of an international U16 alpine skiing competition. It iscomparable to those played for years behind as the Zagales (Formigal) and Ardilla (Sierra Nevada) trophies.
Major international events also extend to the young categories. This is the case of the OPAalso known as Alpen Alpine Ski Cup fortheU16category. In the Catalan Baqueira station, the future talents of alpine skiing will descend through Beret Stadium, competing in the specialties of super-G (SG), giant (GS) and parallel team event (PLTE).
The Aranese station has been betting on the high level for some time now. In 2016 and 2019 it was the headquarters of the FIS Snowboardcross World Cup and in 2018 it hosted the OPA Cup in cross-country skiing. Undoubtedly, the station's interest in making its nameknown through the competition is already paying off while continuing its interest in promoting itself through sporting events. It is planned that they represent Spainwitha selection of the best skiers of this U16category,selected by RFEDI. The federation, for its part, leads the international competitioncalendar by hosting competitionsin the Spanish ski and snowboard stations, following the Strategic Plan, which seeks to turn our country into a habitual destination of the great FIS events.
Baqueira Beret is located in the northernmost part of the Catalan Pyrenees andisin the province of Lleida. It is located on the Atlantic side, so this ski area offers a unique climate and landscape compared to other Spanish stations. With more than 160 km of skiing and a descent of 1,100m (1,510 to 2,610m), Baqueira Beret has a capacity of 61,000pph and more than 700 snow cannons.
